In late January of this year, Christopher Wray, head of the FBI, testified that hackers from the People’s Republic of China were well positioned to “wreak havoc and cause real-world harm” to American citizens and communities by attacking critical infrastructure. The “Commercial Facilities Sector”, which includes office buildings and condominiums, is a critical infrastructure sector.

With the move toward Smart Buildings, high-rise building facilities, such as elevators, HVAC and access control systems, which used to be stand-alone and hard wired, are increasingly controlled by computers, interconnected on networks, and more recently, accessible from the Internet for remote access, present an inviting target for hackers.

This panel session will explain the cyber threat, include a live demo of public websites which search the Internet for access to undefended BAS controllers, and present what progressive equipment vendors and systems integrators are doing to secure buildings
